Module 1 · Title 24 Overview
How California Title 24 is organized; what Parts matter to electricians; prescriptive vs performance; AHJ roles.
Learning Outcomes
- Identify which Title 24 Parts affect electrical scope (Part 6 & Part 11).
- Explain prescriptive vs performance paths and how modeling impacts design.
- Locate energy notes, LPD, and controls requirements on typical plan sets.
Key Terms
CEC, BSC, AHJ, LPD, Mandatory Measures, Prescriptive Path, Performance Path, Acceptance Testing.
Deep Dive
Title 24 Structure
Title 24 is the CA Building Standards Code. Electricians primarily interface with Part 6 (Energy Code) and Part 11 (CALGreen). Local AHJs enforce via plan check and inspections.
Compliance Paths
Prescriptive: meet fixed component requirements (LPD, controls, daylighting triggers) without trade-offs.
Performance: energy model allows trade-offs; you still must meet mandatory measures.
Where Requirements Live on Plans
- General notes (energy/controls)
- Lighting schedules (wattage/controls capability)
- Floor/ceiling plans (sensor/device locations)
- One-line/controls risers
Worked Example: Reading a TI Plan
- Find lighting schedule: verify fixture input watts and dimming capability.
- Check general notes for occupancy/daylight requirements.
- Mark primary/secondary daylight zones on the plan near glazing.
- Note sequences of operation for each space type.
