🎨 Paint & Wallcovering Cheat Sheet

Quick references for finishes, estimating, coverage rates, and installation details.

🔎 Symbols & Plan Notes

  • Finish schedule: lists wall/ceiling/trim paint types, colors, sheens.
  • Wallcovering tag: “WC-1, WC-2” noted on elevations/schedules.
  • Paint legend: abbreviations (EP = epoxy, LAT = latex, EG = eggshell, SEMI = semi-gloss).
  • Pattern/graphic walls: elevation callouts with alignment details.
  • Primer requirements: indicated in general notes or finish schedule.

📐 Key Calculations

  • Paint coverage: 1 gallon ≈ 350–400 SF per coat (smooth), 250–300 SF (rough).
  • Wall SF: perimeter × height – openings (doors/windows).
  • Trim/doors: doors ~20 SF each (flush), windows ~15 SF each.
  • Wallcovering rolls: wall SF ÷ 27 = # of double rolls (1 roll ≈ 27 SF net after match waste).
  • Coats: primer + 2 coats (typical interior); high-performance may require 3–4.
  • Ceiling coverage: plan SF = ceiling paint gallons needed ÷ coverage.

⚡ Quick Reference

  • 🖌️ Interior wall paint: flat/eggshell (living areas), semi-gloss (bath/kitchen/trim).
  • 🖌️ Exterior paint: satin/semi-gloss for durability; elastomeric for stucco/masonry.
  • 🧱 Epoxy coatings: used on floors, kitchens, labs, restrooms.
  • 🪟 Wallcovering roll: ~36" wide × 4–5 yd length (verify manufacturer).
  • 📏 Moisture limits: wall moisture <12% before paint/wallcovering.
  • 🧯 Fire rating: wallcoverings must meet ASTM E84 flame-spread index.
  • 🎨 VOC compliance: verify LEED/green requirements for low-VOC paints.
  • 🪚 Surface prep: patch, sand, clean before application — 80% of good finish is prep.

📝 Self Test

  1. If a wall is 12' high × 100' long with 5 doors (20 SF each), how many gallons of paint are needed for 2 coats?
  2. What does WC-3 on a finish schedule usually mean?
  3. How many double rolls are required for 400 SF of wallcovering?
  4. What finish type is best for bathrooms and kitchens?
  5. What’s the average coverage of 1 gallon of paint on smooth wall surfaces?

Answers: (1) 12×100=1,200 – 100=1,100 SF ÷ 350 ≈ 3.1 gal × 2 coats ≈ 6–7 gallons. (2) Wallcovering type 3. (3) 400 ÷ 27 ≈ 15 rolls. (4) Semi-gloss. (5) 350–400 SF.)
