📏 Plan Scale & Symbols

Architectural drawings rely on graphic scales and standard symbols:

  • North Arrow: Orientation
  • Section Cut: Circle with arrow → see detail
  • Elevation Mark: Arrowed circle → see exterior elevation
  • Door/Window Tag: Hexagon or circle keyed to schedule

Test: What does a circle with two arrows opposite each other usually represent?

🧱 Wall Types & Assemblies

  • Interior Partition: 2×4 studs, 1/2″ GWB both sides
  • Demising Wall: 2×6 studs, 5/8″ Type X both sides

  • Exterior Veneer: 2×6 studs + sheathing + brick veneer

Test: What type of wall is often used between tenant spaces?

🚪 Door & Window Schedules

Schedules define size, type, hardware, glazing:

  • Door Tag: D-101 → 3′-0″ × 7′-0″, hollow metal
  • Window Tag: W-201 → 4′ × 5′ alum. storefront

Test: A door tag "D-105" is found in the plan. Where do you look for its size?

Typical finish abbreviations:

  • PT-1: Paint type 1 (walls)
  • ACT-1: Acoustic ceiling tile, type 1
  • CT-1: Ceramic tile, type 1
  • RB: Rubber base

Test: In a finish schedule, what does "ACT-1" usually mean?

📐 Elevations & Sections

  • Elevation Symbols: Arrow circles — exterior views
  • Section Cuts: Arrows with detail callouts
  • Detail Bubbles: Refers to enlarged construction detail

Test: A bubble with "3/A5.1" means?

♿ ADA & Life Safety

  • Door Clear Width: 32″ min
  • Corridor Width: 36″ min (44″ in assembly)
  • Restroom Turning Radius: 60″ circle
  • Exit Signs: Illuminated @ exits
