HVAC Estimating & Plan Reading Course

This course is designed to teach HVAC estimators how to read construction plans and perform accurate material and labor takeoffs. Ideal for apprentices, junior estimators, and experienced techs moving into project roles.

Course Objectives

  • Understand the complete HVAC estimating process from plans to proposal
  • Read and interpret mechanical plans plus related plan sets (A, S, C, E, P)
  • Perform quantity takeoffs for duct, pipe, and equipment
  • Use labor units, fittings factors, and pricing strategies
  • Build an estimate with real-world markups and risk planning

1. Introduction to Estimating

  • What an HVAC estimate includes (scope, labor, material, equipment)
  • Overview of bid process, documents, and deadlines
  • Understanding addenda, alternates, exclusions

2. Reading Mechanical Plans (M-Sheets)

  • Duct layout symbols and labeling
  • Equipment tags, schedules, and specifications
  • Notes, callouts, legends and M-series conventions

3. Essential Related Plan Sets

  • Architectural (A): Understand ceiling heights, room finishes, and section views
  • Structural (S): Know where to avoid beams, verify openings, hangers, pads
  • Civil (C): Coordinate site HVAC utilities, equipment pads, trenching
  • Electrical (E): Match power needs to RTUs, VFDs, disconnects, controls
  • Plumbing (P): Coordinate condensate drains, make-up water, roof drains

4. Takeoff Mindset & Methods

  • How to start: ductwork, fittings, terminals, flex, grilles
  • Identify branch lines, mains, risers, equipment connections
  • Using colored highlighters or digital tools (e.g. Bluebeam)

5. Labor & Material Pricing

  • Use of manhour charts and fitting factors
  • Vendor pricing for sheet metal, pipe, insulation, controls
  • Apply markups, overhead, supervision, and risk

6. Final Estimate & Proposal

  • Creating a complete summary sheet
  • Clarifying inclusions and exclusions
  • Submitting professional proposals
