The HVAC Study Module 3

Module 3: Ductwork & Equipment Takeoffs

Module 3: Ductwork & Equipment Takeoffs

Overview

This module teaches how to perform a complete HVAC ductwork and equipment takeoff using construction plans. It includes best practices for identifying, quantifying, and recording materials and labor associated with supply, return, and exhaust air systems.

Learning Objectives

  • Identify duct types, fittings, and sizing conventions on mechanical drawings
  • Measure and quantify straight ductwork vs fittings
  • Account for takeoff extras: hangers, insulation, supports
  • Locate HVAC equipment and read schedules for sizing and specs
  • Build a structured takeoff sheet for duct and equipment

Topics Covered

  • Duct Systems: Supply, return, exhaust, and ventilation ducts
  • Measurement Techniques: Linear feet, branch lines, vertical risers
  • Fitting Types: 90s, 45s, transitions, reducers, dampers
  • Accessories: Hangers, flex duct, insulation, volume dampers
  • Equipment: AHUs, RTUs, VAVs, FCUs, exhaust fans
  • Schedules: Reading CFM, voltage, motor HP, tags, location references

Step-by-Step Takeoff Process

  1. Open the mechanical plans (M-sheets) and locate the duct layout
  2. Highlight each duct system by color (supply, return, exhaust)
  3. Measure all straight duct runs per size and label them
  4. Count all fittings per type (elbows, transitions, etc.)
  5. Record accessories (GRDs, dampers, flex connections)
  6. Locate all mechanical equipment and match to schedule
  7. Note pad requirements, weights, electrical coordination
  8. Log totals into a structured takeoff spreadsheet

Sample Takeoff Table (Basic Format)

Item Size Qty / LF Unit Type
Straight Duct - Supply 12x8 180 LF Linear Feet
90 Elbow 12x8 12 Each
AHU (Tag: AHU-2) 5 Ton 1 Each
