The BLS found the leading cause of worker deaths (48%) were do to falls. The purpose of this class is to assist you in identifying fall hazards on the construction site so that you can be protected.
Major Types of Fall Hazards in Construction
Unprotected Edges - Roof & Floor Openings - Structural Steel - Leading Edges
HAZARDS:
Unprotected Sides and Roof/Floor Opening
If sides and opening are not protected, falls could result. These injuries range from strains to death. Unprotected edges is one of the most frequently sited violations. Falls to lower levels almost certainly cause death. As to openings in the roof or floor, something blacking your forward view can cause you to fall into a hole in that roof.
Steel Erection
Workers involved in steel erection are exposed to fall hazards. The rate of work related deaths among steel workers are 10 times the rate of other construction professionals.
2. Improper Scaffold Construction
HAZARDS:
Improper Scaffold Construction - Planking support giving way & Lack of Guardrails
Without fall protection or safe access on an off scaffolds, injuries ranging from sprains to death.
Standard: Guardrail or personal fall arrest systems for fall prevention/protection are required for workers on platforms 10 feet or higher.

You risk falling from a portable ladder if it is not positioned correctly. You can lose your balance on an unsteady ladder. The BLS shows that falls from ladders account
for100 deaths per year.
