Tax Breaks for Minority Firms

The tax incentive programs established by the State of California promote innovation, development, and growth. The California Competes Tax Credit, Main Street Small Business Tax Credit, Opportunity Zones, and other like programs provide opportunities to California’s small businesses to grow and expand.

California is the 5th largest economy in the world, leads in business starts and is driven by the State’s strong innovation and startup culture. It leads the nation in business starts, innovation, and venture capital funding. With its heralded colleges, universities, labs and research institutions, California outspends all other states in research and development expenditures, accounting for over one-fifth of the total U.S. research and development spend and 28.5 percent of U.S. origin patents. California based firms are redefining how we live and are solving global challenges with innovative ideas, products and solutions – the future happens here first.

California continues to hold a strong position thanks to its robust tax incentive programs that help expand businesses to other parts of the state and/or attract new businesses. These programs also provide free or low-cost technical assistance services to help you navigate the application process and connect to other resources, including grants and financing assistance.

Most States have similar programs.

Small Business Grants

Less than 20% of U.S. employer businesses are minority-owned, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. Yet the owners of these 1.1 million minority-owned businesses often face heightened challenges when it comes to securing business funding.

In fact, Black entrepreneurs were three times less likely to apply for credit out of fear of loan denial, according to a paper by Duke University and the UNC Kenan Institute of Private Enterprise that found significant funding gaps between minority groups and white male business owners.

Securing grants—and minority grants in particular—is one solution that aims to help increase access to business funding for minority business owners. With grants, you don’t have to repay the funding your business receives, nor do you have to share a piece of your business with investors. However, because grants are such an attractive funding source, you’re likely to face a lot of competition during the application process.

We help you gain access to 11 small business grants for minority business owners.
