Module 1: Introduction to Framing & Drywall Estimating

Learn the fundamentals of construction estimating, with a focus on framing and drywall. This module introduces the purpose of estimating, key project types, and how context affects your approach.

Learning Objectives

  • Define estimating and why it’s critical in construction.
  • Identify major framing and drywall components.
  • Differentiate residential vs. commercial projects.
  • Compare new construction vs. renovation considerations.

What is Estimating?

  • Definition: Systematic calculation of quantities, costs, and timelines for a project.
  • Importance: Drives bidding, budgeting, cash flow, and client trust; avoids overruns.
  • Framing & Drywall Components: Studs, plates, headers, joists/trusses; drywall sheets, fasteners, joint compound, taping/finish materials.

Types of Projects

  • Residential: Smaller scale; assemblies and finishes drive cost; productivity varies with access and layout.
  • Commercial: Larger, multi-trade coordination; stricter codes; metal stud systems; fire-rated assemblies.
  • New Construction: “Clean sheet” quantities; waste and productivity easier to predict.
  • Renovations: Site surveys essential; concealed conditions and demo impact contingency and hours.
